What is an LPN?

Alleghany CA LPN welcoming patientLicensed Practical Nurses have a number of tasks that they accomplish in the Alleghany CA medical facilities where they practice. As their titles indicate, they are mandated to be licensed in all states, including California. While they may be responsible for overseeing Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), they themselves typically work under the direction of either an RN or a doctor. The medical facilities where they work are numerous and varied, for example hospitals, medical clinics, schools, and long-term care facilities. Anyplace that you can encounter patients seeking medical care is their dominion. Every state not only controls their licensing, but also what work activities an LPN can and can’t perform. So depending on the state, their everyday work functions may include:

    • Taking vital signs
    • Providing medicines
    • Starting IV drips
    • Observing patients
    • Collecting blood or urine samples
    • Managing patient records
    • Supporting doctors or Registered nurses with procedures

In addition to their occupational duties being regulated by each state, the health facilities or other Alleghany CA healthcare providers where LPNs work can further limit their job duties within those parameters. Additionally, they can work in different specialties of nursing, for example long-term care, critical care, oncology and cardiology.

LPN Courses

Alleghany CA LPN holding babyThere are generally two academic credentials offered that provide instruction to become an LPN near Alleghany CA. The one that can be concluded in the shortest amount of time, commonly about 12 months, is the certificate or diploma course. The 2nd option is to earn a Practical Nursing Associate Degree. These LPN programs are broader in nature than the diploma option and commonly require 2 years to complete. The advantage of Associate Degrees, along with providing a higher credential and more extensive instruction, are that they provide more transferable credit toward a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing. No matter the kind of credential you seek, it needs to be state approved and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or any other national accrediting organization. The NLNAC attests that the course of study effectively prepares students to become Practical Nurses, and that most graduates pass the 50 state required NCLEX-PN licensing exam.

  • Accreditation. It’s a good idea to make sure that the certificate program as well as the school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. Besides helping make sure that you receive a premium education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools near Alleghany CA.

In all states, a passing score is required on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) along with graduation from an accredited school. It’s imperative that the school you are attending not only provides an excellent education, but also preps you to meet the minimum licensing requirements for California or the state where you will be practicing.
