What is an LPN?

Cowarts AL LPN welcoming patientLicensed Practical Nurses have many different functions that they accomplish in the Cowarts AL medical facilities where they are employed. As their titles indicate, they are mandated to be licensed in all states, including Alabama. While they may be responsible for overseeing Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), they themselves usually work under the oversight of either an RN or a doctor. The healthcare facilities where they work are numerous and assorted, for example hospitals, medical clinics, schools, and long-term care facilities. Virtually any place that you can encounter patients requiring medical care is their domain. Each state not only regulates their licensing, but also what work activities an LPN can and can’t perform. So based on the state, their everyday work activities might include:

    • Checking vital signs
    • Administering medicines
    • Initiating IV drips
    • Observing patients
    • Taking blood or urine samples
    • Taking care of patient records
    • Assisting physicians or Registered nurses with procedures

In addition to their occupational duties being regulated by each state, the health care facilities or other Cowarts AL healthcare providers where LPNs work can further limit their job duties within those parameters. In addition, they can practice in different specialties of nursing, for example long-term care, critical care, oncology and cardiology.
